Grief, Joy and Healing Ritual

Join us for a four-day retreat to participate in a ritual of mourning and restoring joy based on the Dagara Grief Ritual, as taught by Dagara elder Sobonfu Some.

Grief can be triggered by various moments in life, such as crises, losses, and defeats. There are many experiences that cause emotional injury, and we can also hurt others in the process. There are countless reasons why feelings of sadness may arise. Not all losses are mourned deeply enough to be fully integrated, which can leave a lingering sense of sadness. This subtle sadness can overshadow the joy of life, diminish vitality, and negatively impact one's health. This long weekend will provide a safe space for individuals to express and better integrate their feelings of grief.

The Friday session begins at 3 PM and includes introductions of each member and a discussion about the various types of grief. On Saturday, we will begin the ritual by setting an intention, calling in our ancestral guides, and inviting the Dagara elements to support us in our individual and communal grieving process. The ritual space will remain open throughout the night, allowing participants to continue grieving at the Grief Shrine or to pray at the Forgiveness and Ancestor Shrines. On Sunday morning, there will be additional time at the shrines, and the ritual will conclude with a closing ceremony by 1 PM.

The number of participants is limited to a maximum of 65 people, so early registration is recommended.
